We started doing something that no other Rocky farm in the US does. We are doing Mountain horse rescue. Currently, we have three blind Rockies and they are our pride and joy. Here is Ariel's story. Her registered name is Ariel My Angel. Ariel was our first blind Rocky. One mare named Smokey Mountain Angel from Tennessee and our third mare named Sunny came to us from California.

We also have other horses with injuries that would have been put down if we had not taken them.
Ariel is one of our special horses. She is blind. After gathering information on the reason for her blindness, the vets have concluded that when she was in utero, her mother ran a fever when the eyes were forming. As a result, Ariel was born blind.

There is not a tragic end to Ariel's story though. When I first set eyes on here, I knew I had to have her. We were amazed at the way she could function. She sees some light and some dark, but that is about it. Ariel compensates for her loss of sight by listening and feeling. I was always afraid that she might hit me with her head or run me over, but quite the opposite is true. Ariel is very quiet by me. She lowers her head and buries her nose in my dress.

At 3 years old, Bill is able to ride her and he is doing things that anyone else would do with a normal horse. She loves to have Bill on her back, as she has always loved being as close to us as she could get; However, Ariel does not understand that Bill could fall off from her. When Bill rides her, she wants to romp and play with him on her back, as if they were one. Bill has trained Ariel by using verbal cues and she trusts him implicitly.

We invite you to take a look at our pride and joy, Ariel My Angel. As you look, keep in mind that if it were not for the wonderful temperament of the Rocky Mountain Horse, we would not even attempt this feat. Ariel's demise would have been certain. We love her with all our hearts, My Angel, My Ariel.

The pictures of Ariel were taken at Mystery Cave, Minnesota. We took her on a weekend outing just to see what she was made of. She crossed rivers and did everything Bill asked her to do. We were amazed! Gossip spreads fast, so everybody in the campground knew there was a blind horse there. At one point, people were lined up at the river waiting to see Ariel go across!
