One of them thar' Versitility horses??

On August 31, 2002 the Rocky Mountain horse amazed me once again. Bill took Tim's Mountain Jet and our friend Jan from Montanta rode Sterling Blue in The Yellow Stone Wis. Competitive 25 Mile Endurance ride. The ride took place in the Yellow Stone refuge which was laid out over 2500 acres in the wildlife refuge in LaFayette County. Awards for the Endurance and Competitive rides, were given through 3rd place.

With cooler and doughnuts in hand, Bill and Jan took off on friday night to get to Yellow Stone in time to Vet their horses in, spend the night in the truck and took off at 7:10 a.m. Now keep in mind that neither Bill, nor Jet or Sterling Blue had never participated in any event like this ever before. There were several Vet checks along the route, and even a suprise vet check as they pressed on 25 miles over rocky, hilly and rough terrain. When it was all said and done, Tim's Mountain Jet, with a resting heart rate of 32, finished up in 3rd place!! AMAZING!!! When Bill came home with the ribbon and prize, I could hardly believe my eyes!! According to the score sheet, the longer Jet went, the better his heart rate and respirations got... I wonder what Bill's was after consuming a whole tin of doughnuts???

Bill was warned up front from one of the organizers of the ride, that he should not be wearing blue jeans because with all that posting, he was going to rub himself raw. HA!! Little did she know that Bill was not going to post at all!! Jan, who rides her Arabs in Endurance Events out in Montana, was ready to take Sterling Blue home with her when she finished because she had fallen in love with him and his wonderful gait. As Bill and Jan rode along on the boys, hardly anybody even noticed that they were both riding stallions because they were so quiet.

But what was the best part of all you ask??? Well, Bill ran into one of our long lost members that we have always enjoyed, Steve Smith on his Rocky stallion, Ru Dah Dee!!! They met up almost immediately, Bill pointing at Steve saying "I was going to call you!" Steve pointed back and said "I was going to call you too!!" Guys!! Go figure... neither one knew how to dial the phone!!

All in all, there is one thing that just makes me giggle... it was something that one of our friends from TN said when he first saw the Rocky Mountain Horse. We had explained the wonderful temperament of the horse, and its many uses... a working horse, a trail horse, a show horse, a buggy horse, you name it, they can do it, we told him. He looked at us with a raised eyebrow, with a thoughtful look on his face as he said "So ya got ya one of them there Versitility Horses"?? With a big grin, and an endurance ride under our belts, I'd have to say... Yup!!!
